Birmingham midfielder Keith Fahey, making only his fourth appearance for the Republic, netted the winner against Armenia in the 76^th minute after being set up by Liam Lawrence. It was also Fahey’s first goal for Ireland, and the 27 year old could not have asked for a better time to score it.

Before Fahey’s winner Sean St.Ledger and skipper Robbie Keane had both gone close for the Republic. Coach Giovanni Trappatoni withdrew Robbie Keane towards the end of the game as a precautionary measure but the Tottenham forward will be fit for the Andorra game.

Andorra gave Russia some anxious moments in their opening qualifier but eventually lost 2-0 as Pavel Pogrebanyak scored a goal in either half for Dick Advocaat’s side.
