The Finns were upset 2-0 by Moldova in Chisinau on Friday, a result that prompted many fans to declare their qualification chances to be as good as finished. The starting XI, veterans Jari Litmanen, Jonathan Johansson and Sami Hyypia included, had little to be proud of at the final whistle as they went down to a Moldovan team that had not won a competitive game since 2007.

Veteran defender Hyypia was sent off in the first half for bringing Viorel Frunze in the box and is suspended for Finland’s trip to Rotterdam. Mika Väyrynen summed up Finland’s evening when he missed a sitter in front of goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Holland thrashed San Marino 5-0 to open their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign in style. A hat trick from Klaas Jan Huntelaar, a recent Schalke signing, allowed the Dutch to comfortably beat their opponents. Dirk Kuyt and Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the other goals for the Oranje.
