The Russians had Pavel Pogrebanyak to thank as they beat Andorra 2-0 in their group opener. The Stuttgart striker opened the scoring in the 14^th minute after being set up by his skipper, Arsenal playmaker Andrei Arshavin.

Pogrebanyak scored his second shortly after the hour mark from the penalty spot. Substitute Alan Dzagoev earned the spot kick that was converted by Pogrebanyak. Arshavin, Igor Semshov and Dzagoev all went close to adding another goal for the Russians, but Dick Advocaat’s men had to eventually settle for a 2-0 win.

Slovakia earned a stoppage time win over Macedonia in their opening game thanks to Filipe Holosko’s dramatic winner. Holosko netted in the first minute of second half injury time as Slovakia picked up all three points in Bratislava. The Slovaks missed key strikers Robert Vittek and Stanislav Sestak against Macedonia because of injuries.
