After performing remarkably well at the recently concluded World Cup, the Dutch will be hoping for a comfortable passage into Euro 2012. They start their campaign with an away trip to lowly San Marino this weekend. Catch all the action of San Marino v Netherlands live with Ole Ole Football.
Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk has made seven changes to the squad which lost to Spain in the World Cup Finals. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Andre Ooijer and Sander Boschker have retired from international football while Ryan Babel, Stijn Schaars and Edson Braafheid have been dropped for the ties against San Marino and Finland. Star winger Arjen Robben has also been sidelined with a groin injury.
Jeremain Lens, Theo Janssen and Hedwiges Maduro are some of the new faces which one will see in the Dutch squad. Ron Vlaar, Erik Pieters and Vurnon Anita will be vying for the left-back slot vacated by erstwhile skipper Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The Dutch attack looks in good shape with the likes of Kuyt, van Persie, Sneijder, Huntelaar and van der Vaart playing in advanced positions.
San Marino have lost all competitive games for the last seven years; their last win coming against Liechtenstein back in 2004. Coach Giampaolo Mazza will be up against the odds when his side hosts the Dutch. Avoiding defeat against Holland would in itself be a big achievement for this tiny nation.
Striker Andy Selva, who plays for Hellas Verona in Italy, is the San Marino captain. He has eight international goals to his credit – the only San Marino player ever to score more than one international goal. Any minute threat to the Dutch defence will come through Selva and his strike partner Manuel Marani.
