England and Bulgaria have met five times before in international competition. The Three Lions have won two of these five encounters, with the other three ending in draws. The first meeting between the two sides, at the 1962 World Cup, ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
England won both games when the two sides met in qualifying for Euro 1980. The Three Lions beat Bulgaria 3-0 in Sofia in June 1979 and followed it up with a 2-0 win over their East European opponents at Wembley in September later that year. The last two meetings between these two sides came in qualifying for Euro 2000. Both the fixtures ended in draws, with a total of two goals being scored over both legs.
In the absence of regular skipper Rio Ferdinand, Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard will captain the squad. Gerrard scored a brace in England’s last international friendly against Hungary three weeks ago. Also missing from action will be Chelsea duo John Terry and Frank Lampard and Fulham striker Bobby Zamora.
Bulgaria are captained by Aston Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov, a midfielder who plies his trade in England. Petrov has become the main man in this Bulgarian outfit ever since the retirement of Man United striker Dimitar Berbatov earlier this season. The Bulgarian squad is almost entirely made of footballers playing outside Bulgaria.
Will England pick up all three points at Wembley on Friday? Or will it end up being a historic night for the Bulgarian football team? See England vs Bulgaria online and find out.
