Basel could have qualified for the knockout stages on Match Day 5, but their loss to Roma means that the Swiss side must either draw or beat Fulham on Wednesday to join the Giallorossi in the next round.

Thorsten Fink’s men were the first to score at Stadio Olimpico on Match Day 5. Valentin Stocker's cross from the left wing was headed by an unmarked Benjamin Huggel past Roma keeper Julio Sergio. However thirteen minutes later Marcos Gelabert fouled Francesco Totti in the box and Il Capitano beat Basel keeper Stefan Wessels from twelve yards out. Roma scored their second against the run of play on 58 minutes. Some nice work down the right flank saw the ball arrive at the foot of Daniele De Rossi, who passed for Mirko Vucinic to fire home.

Basel beat Biel Bienne 3-1 in the Swiss Cup on Saturday. Alexander Frei’s brace set them on their way and Marco Streller added a third in the 69^th minute to ensure that Basel progressed into the next round without breaking sweat.

Fulham have three players suspended for the visit to Switzerland. Chris Baird, whose cross allowed Fulham to beat CSKA 1-0 on Match Day 5 is one of them. Paul Konchesky and Erik Nevland are the other two. Jonathan Greening is available after serving a one match ban.

Fulham drew 1-1 with Burnley on Saturday and could have easily come away with all three points from Turf Moor. They will have skipper Danny Murphy back for the Basel clash. Striker Andy Johnson also expected to make a late appearance in the game.
