Rapid’s chances of qualification ended a fortnight ago when they were beaten 2-0 by Hamburger SV. They are in fourth place in Group C with four points to their name. Rapid have also conceded eleven goals in Group C so far- the joint second weakest defence in the group stages behind Partizan Belgrade, who have shipped in fourteen.
Celtic beat Motherwell 3-2 in the SPL on Saturday. Georgios Samaras put the Hoops ahead on fourteen minutes, collecting Landry N’Guemo’s pass and evading three defenders before producing a cool finish to beat Well keeper John Ruddy.
Motherwell recovered to lead at half time but Aiden McGeady brought Celtic back on level terms by finding the top corner of Ruddy’s net in the 52nd minute. Shortly after the hour mark Samaras earned a penalty after being fouled by Steven Saunders. Unfortunately for Celtic, Ruddy guessed the right way and saved Barry Robson’s penalty kick. However substitute Marc Antoine Fortune scored a wonderful goal in the 79th minute to give Tony Mowbray’s side all three points.
Celtic and Rapid drew 1-1 when they met earlier in the competition. Nikica Jelavic’s fourth minute opener for the Austrians was cancelled out by Scott McDonald midway through the first half at Parkhead.
