When unfashionable Fulham hosted Italian giants Roma at their quaint Craven Cottage ground in London two weeks ago, they were one kick away from recording a famous victory over their more illustrious counterparts, but with the last kick of the game Roma managed the equaliser that ensures the group will go down to the wire in terms of which teams qualify.

The way things stand at the moment in Group E, Basel lead the way after three games with six points, Fulham follow on five, Roma are in third on four points and CSKA Sofia head up the rear with a solitary point. In terms of qualification then, it couldn’t be much closer with three games to go. Roy Hodgson and Fulham will be looking for the draw at least so they are not at a disadvantage going into the last two games of the group.

At the weekend, Fulham recorded a great 3-1 home victory against Liverpool in the English Premier League. Although it was a great win, it was a rather fortuitous one as for the first half an hour of the game they barely got out of their own half. Nevertheless, they scored with their first attack, but when Fernando Torres equalised for the Reds the writing looked on the wall for the home side. They did manage to take the lead early in the second half, but their cause was helped no end by two Liverpool red cards!
