Latvian side VK Ventspils take on the Germans from Hertha Berlin this coming Thursday evening as the Europa League group D enters its matchday number five. In matchday one Ventspils played Hertha in Berlin and surprisingly came away with a 1-1 draw, and while this was Hertha’s first game against opposition from Latvia, it was Ventspils second attempt at playing a German team, the first one was back in 2002. Although Ventspils are playing at home on Thursday evening, it will still be seen as somewhat of a surprise should they beat the Germans. They have to play their home games at the Skonto Stadium in Riga due to the fact that their own stadium is too small to host European games.

The Latvian domestic league has already finished for this season and Ventspils finished as runner-up with 74 points, five behind the champions SK Liepajas Metalurgs. Hertha are currently last in the German Bundesliga with just five points from thirteen games.
