In the third round of the cup Martin O’Neill’s side again played at Villa Park, but against Premier League opposition. After such a great start to the season, Villa appear to be going through a mini slump at the moment in the Premier League and they haven’t won in the last three games. Defeats against Arsenal (away) and Liverpool (home) were followed by a home draw last time out against struggling West Ham United. The 0-0 result was greeted with dismay from the Villa fans and memories of last season’s collapse in the final months were brought uncomfortably to the fore.

For their part, League One side Brighton and Hove Albion are not doing so well so far this season. They currently sit in eighteenth position and have 27 points to their name. Last weekend they travelled up to Walsall and managed to win the game by two goals to one. Their away league form is pretty decent for a side so low in the table – they have won five, drawn four and lost five of their games.
