Bolton made heavy weather of a supposedly easy tie against non league York in the previous round but eventually prevailed thanks to two late goals from Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander. York seemed to have done enough to merit a replay before Davies and Elmander both came off the bench to give Bolton that cutting edge upfront that took the Trotters past the Minstermen.

Wigan edged a five goal thriller against Hull City to book their spot in the fourth round of the competition. Callum McManaman set up Mohamed Diame for the first and scored the second himself to put the Latics 2-0 ahead. Diame then scored another thirteen minutes from time to seal a somewhat tense game for Wigan.
