The tie will the third meeting in a month despite the sides being in different leagues, after the clubs met in the two-legged semi final of the Carling Cup. Derby stunned Manchester United 1-0 in the first leg courtesy of a Kris Commons free-kick before a pulsating second leg at Old Trafford. Nani, John O’Shea and Carlos Tevez fired United into a 3-1 aggregate lead before Giles Barnes gave the Championship side a glimmer of hope from the penalty spot. Cristiano Ronaldo then seemingly sealed the win with a penalty in the 89th minute before a 90th minute Barnes free-kick set up a tense finish to a superb two leg affair.
Derby booked their place in the fifth round with a 3-2 away derby win at rivals Nottingham Forest in the fourth round replay after the sides originally drew 1-1. Forest thought they had sealed the win early on after going 2-0 up thanks to Chris Cohen and Nathan Tyson, before Derby pulled off a magnificent comeback with goals from Rob Hulse, Paul Green and Kris Commons.
Manchester United faced a stern test from Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round but came out on top after a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford. Roman Pavlyuchenko had sent Tottenham into the lead before veteran midfielder Paul Scholes equalised on 35 minutes. Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov then sealed the win a minute later to fire United into the fifth round.
