Home side Everton have not lost a Premier League match since the home reversal to neighbours Liverpool. Since then they have had two wins and five draws, but that sequence involved a home win against Manchester City, away draws at Arsenal and Chelsea, and home draws with Birmingham and Tottenham – all teams in the top eight of the Premier League at the moment.

In the last round of the FA Cup, Everton hosted League One side Carlisle at Goodison Park and they duly despatched their lower league rivals by three goals to one, although at 1-1 the second Everton goal was scored as late as the 82 minute.

For their part, Birmingham City go into the game against Everton having disposed of in-form Championship side Nottingham Forest 1-0 at St. Andrews. The game was a keenly contested one by the two Midlands sides and it took a 62^nd minute goal from Barry Ferguson (his first for the club) to seal the deal in favour of the Blues.

In the Premier League, Birmingham’s game at Portsmouth was postponed at the weekend, but their last league game was a 1-1 home draw against Manchester United. Birmingham have now gone twelve Premier League games without a defeat.
