Manchester United and Leeds United are renowned for their hatred of each other, mainly stemming from the encounters in the seventies and early eighties. Since Leeds’ demise in the early noughties though and their subsequent drop to the third tier of English football, encounters between the two have been non-existent. Sunday will offer fans of both teams the ideal opportunity to get reacquainted with each other.

Manchester United have a Wednesday evening fixture against Wigan Athletic at home to traverse before Sunday’s encounter, but prior to Wednesday’s game United’s last fixture was a 3-1 away victory at Hull City last weekend. Wayne Rooney was instrumental in the game and actually had a hand in all four goals – yes, even Hull’s thanks to a sloppy back pass which lead to Hull’s penalty and subsequent equaliser. He scored United’s opener and also had an assist for their other two goals.

If United win their home game against Wigan on Wednesday, they will climb to within two points of Premier League leaders Chelsea. As things stand, they are five points behind in second place, and two ahead of third placed Arsenal who have a game in hand over United.

Leeds enjoyed a 4-2 victory away to Stockport in League One on Monday and are now eight points clear of second placed Charlton in the standings with a game in hand.
