St.Mirren were totally outplayed by Celtic last week at Parkhead. Jack Ross’ dismissal midway through the first half did not help matters either. The Buddies qualified for the last eight of the Scottish Cup by beating Motherwell in the fifth round. Billy Mehmet scored the winning goal for St.Mirren in the replay after the original tie had ended in a draw. Centre back Scott Cuthbert, on loan from Celtic, is ineligible to play against his former club.
St.Mirren drew 1-1 with Aberdeen in their midweek Scottish Premier League match. Striker Craig Dargo scored for St.Mirren with ten minutes left on the clock, only for Tommy Wright to level scores with a stoppage time header.
Celtic’s 7-0 thrashing of St.Mirren even surprised Rangers boss Walter Smith. Shunsuke Nakamura struck a hat trick as Celtic romped home to a 7-0 victory. Manager Gordon Strachan was happy with the result, but agreed that Ross’ sending off had played a vital role in turning the balance of the game Celtic’s way.
The Bhoys qualified for the last eight by beating Queens’ Park in the fifth round. Gary Caldwell and Scott McDonald were on target for Celtic as they won 2-1. Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady had scored when Celtic beat Dundee FC in the fourth round.
Is another thrashing on the cards for St.Mirren? Or will they atone for their poor performance last week by knocking the Hoops out of the Cup? Celtic have the Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Rangers coming up after this, and would want to go into that game on a winning note.
