The two sides last met on Boxing Day in December 2004, with West Ham prevailing 3-2 thanks to a brace from veteran striker Teddy Sheringham. David Johnson also netted two in the game for Forest but his efforts went in vain as Sheringham and the Hammers had the last laugh at Upton Park.

West Ham beat Barnsley 2-0 at home in the previous round of the competition. A first half goal for American defender Jonathan Spector and a second half injury time strike from Frederic Piquionne were enough for the Hammers to see off the Tykes. Forest meanwhile moved into the fourth round by beating Preston North End 2-1 away from home. The winning goal was scored by Luke Chambers after Darren Carter’s opener for Preston was cancelled out by Paul Anderson.
