Mick McCarthy’s Wolves side thrashed Championship side Doncaster Rovers 5-0 in the previous round to set up a meeting with the Potters. They took an early lead through Steven Fletcher and once Geoffrey Mujangi Bia netted the second on the hour mark, it was all one way traffic at Molineux. Further strikes from Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and Dave Jones sealed an emphatic win for the home side.

Stoke City overcame Cardiff City in the third round. After the first leg at the Britannia Stadium had ended in a 1-1 draw, the reverse fixture in Cardiff also failed to separate the two teams at the end of regulation time. However Jonathan Walters scored twice in extra time to send the Potters through at the expense of their Championship opponents.
