AEK picked up eight points from the game against Sydney- three for the win, and five for each goal scored to go to the top of the table after the first round of fixtures. Leonardo Pereira and Ismael Blanco netted for AEK in the first half as the Greek side lead 2-1 going into the interval.

Sydney managed to equalise in the second half, but Nikos Liberopoulos restored AEK’s lead soon after. Further goals from Ignacio Scocco and skipper Pantelis Kafes put the result of the game beyond doubt.

Blackburn went down 2-1 to Glasgow Rangers in their opening game. David Dunn scored the only goal of the game for Rovers from the penalty spot. Rovers coach Sam Allarydce will be hoping that his jet lagged players will put on a better performance against AEK.
