Chelsea adopted a 4-1-2-1-2 against Crystal Palace with Petr Cech in goal and Bruma, Van Aanholt, Alex and Bertrand in defence. Nigerian international John Obi Mikel sat behind the midfield duo of Essien and Matic, while young Josh McEachran was employed behind Sturridge and Di Santo.

Cech captained Chelsea against Crystal Palace, but the Czech keeper will play no part in this friendly against Ajax after tearing a muscle in his right calf. Veteran Portuguese keeper Henrique Hilario is expected to deputise for Cech under the sticks. In the absence of Cech as well as regular captains John Terry and Frank Lampard, Ghana midfielder Michael Essien should lead the team out against Ajax.

This match is Ajax’s first home after the conclusion of the 2010 World Cup. This will also be Spanish midfielder Gabri’s farewell game- he will be plying his trade for Umm-Salal next season.
