Villa had a mixed Guadiana Cup in Portugal. They beat Dutch outfit Feyenoord Rotterdam 3-1 in their tournament opener, but were comprehensively outclassed 4-1 by reigning Portuguese champions SL Benfica in their second game.

Benfica raced to a four goal lead in Portugal before Norwegian star John Carew netted a consolation goal for Villa. Against Feyenoord, Emile Heskey, Steve Sidwell and Marc Albrighton were on target for the Midlands outfit. Midfielder James Milner did not feature against either Feyenoord or Benfica due to injury but fans could get to see him in action against Valencia.

Valencia finished third in La Liga last season behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Los Che were last seen in action against Olympique Marseille, a pre-season friendly which they lost 1-0. Hatem Ben Arfa scored the winning goal for Marseille thirteen minutes from time.
