Spain travel across to Austria on Wednesday having already played a friendly in this international week window. On Saturday they faced Argentina in a prestigious friendly in Spain and ultimately came out victorious in a tempestuous affair that saw six Argentineans booked along with one Spaniard. Austria didn’t play a game over the weekend.

In their game against Diego Maradona’s Argentina side, Spain were given a sterner test than of late and were only a couple of minutes away from drawing the match. The Spanish had opened the scoring in the sixteenth minute when Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso slotted home. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi equalised from the penalty spot for the Argentineans in the 62^nd minute of the contest, and this set up a great last thirty minutes of play.

As tempers flared, six Argentina players were booked in the contest; a contest fast becoming something more than a friendly. With the clock showing 86 minutes, the Spanish were awarded a penalty and that man Alonso calmly steeped up to despatch the spot kick and hand Spain another impressive victory.

Despite the quality of the opposition, for Diego Maradona this was another defeat in his tenure as Argentina manager, and when all is said and done, this is not good enough for a team that has/had so many aspirations.
