Aston Villa’s last game was against near neighbours Walsall at the Banks’ Stadium. Boss Martin O’Neill put up a team of mostly reserve and young players, but Villa were dealt a huge blow when James Collins limped off after just thirty seconds. Collins was one of three Villa regulars to start against the Saddlers, with striker John Carew and goalkeeper Brad Friedel being the other two.

Collins has travelled with the squad to Portugal but is unlikely to feature against Feyenoord. Villa eventually beat Walsall 2-1 thanks to a goal in either half from Andreas Weimann. Winger Marc Albrighton also had a fine outing for the Midlands side.

Benfica and Feyenoord, both regulars in Europe, are Villa’s opponents at the Guadiana Cup. Feyenoord finished fourth in Holland last season while Benfica were crowned champions in Portugal.
