Greece and Ukraine will face off in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off this coming Saturday evening, and the match will be played in Greece. With the hopes of their respective nations on their shoulders, the two teams go into battle knowing full well the consequences of the two legs outcome. Both Greece and the Ukraine will feel they have what it takes to qualify for next summer’s jamboree in South Africa so the two matches between the pair are sure to be an exhilarating affair.

Greece played in Group Two and narrowly missed out on automatic qualification. They finished the group just one point behind winners Switzerland, with twenty points the final accumulation. These points came from six wins, two draws and two defeats, but automatic qualification was ultimately lost three games from the end when they drew 0-0 away to Moldova while Switzerland were winning. Both teams then won their final two games, but by then it was too late for the Greeks.

The Ukraine played in Group Six but were unlucky enough to come up against a rampant England side that swept to automatic qualification by winning all but the last game of qualifying and finishing on 27 points. Ukraine finished six points behind on 21 and it was them that beat England in the last match of the qualifying stage (although it has to be said that England played most of that match with ten men due to a sending off).
