This is Holland’s second game of the international break. On Saturday evening they travelled to Italy to face the national team in a game that ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The game wasn’t without incident though, and the Dutch (and ultimately, Arsenal) were unlucky enough to lose Robin van Persie with ankle ligament damage which could rule the player out for several weeks, much to the chagrin of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

It was a tough test for both the Dutch and the Italians on Saturday evening and the two World Cup finalists gave it their all to win the game, but to no avail. Neither managers will be particularly unhappy at the result, but the Dutch will be ruing van Persie’s injury.

Paraguay, for their part, half also qualified for next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa, having finished third in the South American qualifying group behind Brazil and Chile, but ahead of Diego Maradona’s Argentina team. They will see the game against Holland on Wednesday as a barometer of their qualities against tough European opposition, who, undoubtedly, they will come up against in next summer’s extravaganza. They didn’t play at the weekend, so will be fresh and raring to go in Wednesday evening’s encounter.
