Hungary finished fourth in Group 1 during European qualifying for the World Cup. They won five of their ten group games and were in contention till the second last round of matches, when they lost 3-0 to Portugal in a crucial qualifier. The team looks quite strong, especially in midfield, where they have the likes of Pal Dardai, Szabolcs Huszti and Tamas Hajnal manning the park.

Russia were eliminated on the away goals rule by Slovenia in the playoffs. Guus Hiddink’s men were made to pay a heavy price for the late away goal they conceded in the first leg. All but four members of the squad- skipper Andrei Arshavin, midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and strikers Roman Pavlyuchenko and Pavel Pogrebanyak, ply their trade in Russia.
