Italy and the Netherlands face off in a prestigious international friendly this coming Saturday with both teams happy in the knowledge that they have safely qualified for next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa. The match on Saturday in Italy marks the start of both teams’ preparations for next summer’s showpiece event and the management of both sides will be looking to test out some fringe players and youngsters who still feel they have a chance of breaking into the World Cup squad. With the serious business of qualification out of the way, the teams can relax and hopefully offer up a very good game of football between two excellent teams.

Italy were in Group 8 of World Cup qualifying and ended up in a scrap with the Republic of Ireland for the automatic qualifying spot. In the end the Italians held out and won the group with 24 points to their name. The points from their ten games came from seven wins and three draws and they were very happy to go through qualifying without suffering a single defeat, although they did have a couple of scares along the way; namely against the minnows of Cyprus, twice. In the game in Cyprus they managed to win 2-1 thanks to a goal two minutes into injury time, and in the game in Italy they were losing 2-0 up until the 80^th minute but still managed to turn it around and win 3-2!

The Dutch cruised their way through their group, winning every single game and finishing a whole fourteen points ahead of the second placed team.
