Italy will make use of another international game on Wednesday as they prepare for next summer’s World Cup finals. This time the opponents are Sweden, who themselves just missed out on the play-offs.
On Saturday the Italians entertained the Netherlands in a prestigious friendly in Pescara; a game that ended in a 0-0 draw. The main talking point in the game was the serious injury suffered by Holland player Robin van Persie. Although final prognosis is yet forthcoming, it is feared that he has damaged his ankle ligaments which could ultimately keep him out of football until after Christmas.
The game on Wednesday against the Swedes will give the Italians another chance to experiment with their team, offering the chance for some of the fringe players to stake their claim for a berth in the squad for next summer’s football party.
For their part, the Swedish team were very unlucky to miss out on a play-off place. For the whole of Group A qualifying they were on the shirttails of ultimate group winners Denmark, but messed things up in the last two games and lost second place, and therefore a play-off spot, to Portugal. The final group table saw the Danes qualify on 21 points, the Portuguese finishing second on nineteen, and the Swedes coming in with eighteen points.
