Japan were beaten 2-0 by regional rivals South Korea in Saitama last week. The Blue Samurai were second best in all departments of the game as they failed to avenge a 3-1 defeat suffered at the hands of the same opponents in February. Manchester United’s Park Ji Sung scored the opener, while young Park Chu Young netted Korea’s second from the spot.

England did well to beat Mexico 3-1 at Wembley in their last friendly, but it was obvious that there was plenty of scope for improvement. Leighton Baines was poor at left back, meaning that Stephen Warnock could seal his place on the flight to South Africa with an assured performance against the Japanese. Ledley King, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson were the scorers for England against Javier Aguirre’s Mexicans.
