Roy Hodgson chose to start with only three first team regulars in his first match as Liverpool manager. The three were Lucas Leiva, Alberto Aquilani and David Ngog, all of whom were substituted in the second half of the game. Lucas started the game as Liverpool captain.

Striker Ngog had two great chances to put Liverpool ahead in the first half, but was unable to the make the most of them. Former Roma man Alberto Aquilani also squandered a couple of decent opportunities as the Reds had to settle for a stalemate.

Kaiserslautern’s last game, a friendly against French side FC Metz, also ended in a 0-0 scoreline like the Grasshopper-Liverpool fixture. Fans got an opportunity to see new signing Erwin Hoffer in action and the Austrian would have given his side the lead in the first half but for the heroics of opposition keeper Marichez.
