This game will be City and Sporting’s first of the New York Challenge. The tournament kicked off on Thursday night with the New York Red Bulls taking on Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester City have been the biggest spenders in the summer transfer market. The Citizens have already bought Spanish midfielder David Silva, HSV defender Jerome Boateng and Barcelona medio Yaya Toure. Yaya, the brother of City skipper and former Arsenal defender Kolo, is expected to make his debut for the Citizens against Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting’s last game was against Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic at Fenway Park. The game went to penalties after Sporting’s Helder Postiga had cancelled out Georgios Samaras’ opener for Celtic. The Hoops prevailed 6-5 in the shootout, with Liedson missing a crucial penalty for Sporting.
