The Spanish added the World Cup to the European Championship in their trophy cabinet by beating the Netherlands a month ago in Johannesburg. The scorer of the winning goal at Soccer City, Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, will not turn out for Spain in this friendly. Also omitted from the champions’ World Cup winning squad are striker Fernando Torres, goalkeeper Pepe Reina, defender Raul Albiol and midfielder Javi Martinez.
Villarreal midfielder Bruno Soriano has been given his maiden call up to the Spanish squad by manager Vicente Del Bosque. Other new faces include Santi Cazorla and Osasuna’s Ignacio Monreal.
Mexico reached the last sixteen of the 2010 World Cup before losing to Argentina in the second round, just as they had done at the 2006 World Cup. El Tri coach Javier Aguirre put in his papers after the tournament. Enrique Meza is temporarily in charge of the squad and has called up thirteen players from the country’s World Cup squad.
