As if Argentina’s week couldn’t get any worse following their 2-1recversal to Spain on Saturday, FIFA announced that Argentinean coach Diego Maradona will be banned for two months from all football related activity, starting from November 15^th 2009, and ending on January 15^th 2010. The punishment was for a scathing rant at the press following his team’s qualification through to the World Cup finals in South Africa. He will therefore not be able to take charge at his team’s game against the Nigerians on Wednesday.

Despite finally qualifying for next summer’s extravaganza, Argentina have not been playing the football everybody knows they can play while under the stewardship of Maradona. Their results have been very iffy and some of their team selections have been baffling to say the least. On Saturday against Spain they played a bit better than of late and were actually holding the Spaniards to a 1-1 draw until two minutes from time when Xabi Alonso slotted in a winning penalty for Spain. It is interesting to note that Argentina had six players booked in the match, compared to Spain’s one.

Nigeria have also managed to qualify for the finals next summer, and they did it on Saturday when they beat Kenya 3-2 away and because of that topped their African qualifying group with twelve points, with Tunisia finishing second with eleven.
