Portugal warmed up for the Group of Death as they beat the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 3-1 in a friendly last week. It was a welcome win for the Seleccao, who faced criticism from fans and pundits alike after their inability to score against lowly Cape Verde. Porto midfielder Raul Meireles netted a brace, while Manchester United winger Nani scored the other goal. Skipper Cristiano Ronaldo came close to scoring on two occasions, but could not break his international goal drought. Pierre Webo scored the only goal of the game for Cameroon, who also had striker Samuel Eto’o sent off.

The Mambas of Mozambique started off well in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations by drawing with Benin, but successive losses to continental heavyweights Egypt and Nigeria saw them go out of the competition in Round 1.
