Romania have not won an international game since beating Honduras 3-0 in June. They were beaten 2-0 by both Turkey and France and could only manage draws against Belarus and lowly Albania.

At this moment, Romania are second from bottom in their Euro 2012 qualifying group, six points behind joint leaders France and Belarus. In the last four and a half decades, Romania have only beaten Italy once- in a European qualifier in April 1983. Since that defeat, Italy have won three of the four meetings between the two sides.

The two sides last clashed against each other in Euro 2008. The fixture ended in a 1-1 draw with Adrian Mutu scoring for Romania and Christian Panucci netting for the Azzurri. Romania could have won that game had Mutu converted a late spot kick earned by team mate Daniel Niculae.
