Slovakia and the United States will battle it out in Bratislava this coming Saturday afternoon, as both teams make full use of the enforced international weekend which is taking place due to the World Cup qualifying play-offs. Slovakia can enjoy the game against the Americans happy in the knowledge that they are already through to the finals of the World Cup which take place in the summer of 2010 in South Africa. The same, of course, can be said for their opponents, the United States, as they also qualified for the finals. Both teams finished top of their respective final groups in qualifying and will use the match as much needed practise in their preparations for the extravaganza next summer.

Slovakia played in Group Three of European qualification and finished ahead of the chasing pack with 22 points to their name, two ahead of second placed Slovenia who themselves face a play off this weekend against Russia. The Slovaks won seven, drew one and lost two of their ten qualifying games and guaranteed qualification with a last match victory in Poland by 1-0.

The United States, for their part, went through a complicated procedure for qualifying, but eventually ended up in a group of six teams fighting for the three automatic qualifying places on offer. In the end the Americans finished top of this elite qualifying group with 20 points from ten games played, just one ahead of second placed Mexico but four ahead of third placed Honduras.
