The Swiss have lost their last three international fixtures. A 1-0 loss to Norway last November was followed by more recent defeats against Uruguay and Costa Rica. However Hitzfeld has refused to read too much into the loss against Costa Rica, saying that he was happy with the attitude of his players.

Italy coach Marcelo Lippi axed Giuseppe Rossi and Marco Borriello as he trimmed his squad down to 23. There are nine players from Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning squad, and one of them, Mauro Camoranesi, is unlikely to play in this fixture after picking up a knee injury in training. The match against the Swiss will be Italy’s final friendly before they begin the defence of their World Cup campaign.

However the Swiss will not be easy to defeat with a good recent record of five wins from their last six international games. Switzerland are currently in good form, unbeaten in Group 2 of World Cup qualifying and are joint top with Greece. They look likely to qualify for next year’s World Cup and will see this as a test of whether they can compete against the top countries in the world. They qualified for last year’s European Championship but couldn’t make it past the first round.

This current squad however is highly rated with the likes of Leverkusen winger Tranquillo Barnetta West Ham’s Valon Behrami and talented goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler is perhaps the most highly rated player in the Swiss squad and is one to watch.

The Italians had an awful Confederations Cup campaign this summer, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brazil and a humiliating defeat to Egypt. Coach Marcelo Lippi and his side have came in for heavy criticism since those defeats and Lippi has admitted that he might need to change some of the older faces in his side and bring in some younger names.

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi is one of the younger players out to impress before the World Cup next year and the former United star could start this match. Lippi has only named two new faces from the Confederation Cup squad and those are Domenico Criscito of Genoa and Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio.
