Switzerland and Norway go head to head in an international friendly this coming Saturday evening, as both teams make use of the enforced international weekend. Switzerland go into their game against the Norwegians happy in the knowledge that they have booked their place at the World Cup finals which take place in South Africa in the summer of next year. They qualified as winners from Group Two in what turned out to be a ferocious battle with eventual runners-up Greece.

The Swiss finished with 21points to their name, just one ahead of their Greek counterparts. The points were accumulated from six wins, three draws and only one defeat and the players and management of the team will be more than happy with a job well done. Although they won’t be expected (or expecting) to do much in next summer’s finals, just the fact that they are there has given everybody in the country a lift.

The game against Norway on Saturday will be used by the management as a barometer of where the team stand at the moment, as well as the opportunity to select some fringe players who will maybe be trying to break into the World Cup squad.

For their part, Norway didn’t even get close to qualifying for the finals. Although they finished second in Group Nine, they only managed to pick up ten points and were a full fourteen points behind group runaway winners Holland. As their group was the only group with five teams, plus the fact that they only accumulated such a measly points total, meant that Norway didn’t get into the play-offs.
