Milan, who were humiliated 4-0 by Inter earlier in the season, could not avenge that defeat as Jose Mourinho’s side put in another excellent performance to subdue the Rossoneri.  Several of Milan’s players did not simply turn up on the big derby night and Inter won 2-0 despite having only nine players on the pitch at the end of the game.

Argentine striker Diego Milito put Inter ahead on 22 minutes but the Nerazzurri suffered a blow seven minutes later when Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder was sent off. To his credit, Jose Mourinho kept both his forwards on the pitch and was rewarded for it when Pandev curled home Inter’s second of the game after Maicon was fouled by Favalli. Milan were given a late penalty when Lucio handled the ball in his own box but Inter keeper Julio Cesar managed to save Ronaldinho’s spot kick, thereby adding to Milan’s misery.

Udinese went ahead twice in their weekend game against Sampdoria but were unable to hold on to it and eventually crashed to a 3-2 defeat. Antonio Di Natale and Mauricio Isla were the scorers for Gianni de Biasi’e men. The result left the Bianconeri looking nervously over their shoulders, with third from bottom Catania just a point behind.

Udinese beat Lumezzane 2-0 in the round of 16. A penalty from Francesco Lodi and a second half goal from Bernardo Corradi were enough for Udinese to overcome the Lombardian outfit.
