The Italian Cup remains both Inter and Roma’s only realistic shot at silverware this season. Inter were knocked out of the Champions League by German outfit Schalke 04 last week, the Nerazzurri losing 2-1 at Gelsenkirchen to bow out 7-3 on aggregate. They are however still in with a shot of winning the league title, but city rivals Milan currently look better placed to lift the Scudetto.

Roma’s title hopes are already over as the gap between them and leaders Milan is more than fifteen points. Like Inter, they are also out of the Champions League, falling to surprise Ukrainian package Shakhtar Donetsk in the Round of 16. The Giallorossi lost last season’s final to Inter and will be hoping to take revenge for that defeat.

Roma battled past Juventus to reach the semifinals of the Coppa Italia. Playing in Turin, the visitors took the lead shortly after the hour mark through Mirko Vucinic. Victory was sealed through Brazilian winger Rodrigo Taddei’s second half injury time effort, thus sending the Giallorossi through at the expense of the Bianconeri.

Inter’s tie, along with the Palermo-Parma tie, was one of two that went to penalties in the quarterfinals. Pitted against Napoli, the Nerazzurri managed to produce a stalemate after 120 minutes of football. In the shootout, all five Inter players got their spot kicks right while Ezequiel Lavezzi missed for Napoli, thus giving the former a 5-4 win and entry into the semis.
