The win maintained their one point gap over Real Madrid who also won last time out, as well as preserving their perfect home record for the season – played five, won five.

For their part, Athletic Bilbao go into the difficult home match against Barcelona on the back of a 2-0 away win at Racing Santander. They remain in eighth position in the La Liga table with sixteen points. Athletics’ home form thus far in the 2009-2010 La Liga season is pretty average. They have won three and lost two of their five games so far, but will look to improve that if they have lofty aspirations for this season’s marathon.
