The Barcelona manager Josep Gardiola was furious with his side after losing 2-0 to Hercules in their last league game. This Atletico team will be aware that they are suffering a little lack of league form and they are a team that can punish their opposition. New signing Mascherano was injured at the start of the second half last week but came on for Xavi late on in the game in the Champions league. Busquets who had his place back in the team as a result could well make it a permanent appointment once again. Gardiola will have to field his strongest side available to beat Atletico in their home ground so that could well mean Mascherano will suffer as a consequence.

Diego Forlan will have his sights set on the scoreboard against Barcelona as the Uruguayan loves the big games. Sergio Aguero is another player that loves a challenge and he is very similar to Messi in his ability to unlock defences and score goals. Tiago who came from Juventus will have to force Reyes out if he is to get a regular place but he did score after replacing Reyes having only been on the pitch for 3 minute at the time. Atletico’s league form has been erratic so far this season with many expecting the club to qualify for the UEFA Champions League comfortably. However, the club currently sit 7th in the table after a very poor start to 2009 which saw popular manager Javier Aguirre sacked from the club, although reports differ and he may have left by mutual consent. Atletico have won just once in 2009 and face an uphill challenge should they bring European football to the Vicente Calderon next season.

The side come into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw against Porto in the UEFA Champions League midweek and face the tough task of travelling to the Estadio do Dragao to continue on their European path. Abel Resino’s men were lucky to draw on the night with Leo Franco pulling off numerous top class saves to keep the side in the game, with Maxi Rodriguez and Diego Forlan netting the goals for Madrid.

Table toppers Barcelona suffered their first defeat in 22 games at the hands of local rivals Espanyol in their last outing in the La Liga. Espanyol claimed a shock 2-1 victory at the Nou Camp with former Barca man Ivan De La Pena netting a brace to shoot down his former club. Seydou Keita was sent off in the first-half before Yaya Toure netted a consolation goal for the Spanish giants. Despite the result Barca still sit top of the La Liga, although their lead is reduced to 7 points with an in-form Real Madrid catching up to set up a tense finish.
