Atletico made the trip to Valladolid last weekend looking for the win that would help them on their long ascent up the table. And they didn’t disappoint. They ended up winning the game by the impressive score line of four goals to nil. The encouraging news for Atletico supporters was the fact that the goals, two in each half, were scored by four different players.

Thanks to last Saturday evening’s victory Atletico remained on course to climb up the table out of trouble and eventually to challenge for a European place for next season. The team now have twenty points from seventeen games played and their stats read won five, drawn five and lost seven of all their league games. At home they have played eight games, winning three, drawing three and losing two of the games. Their current run of form has seen them win four of their last six La Liga games.

For their part, Sporting Gijon travel to Madrid on the back of a 1-0 home win over Getafe. They are now ninth in the league table and half 24 points to their name so far this season. Away from home they have played eight games, only winning one of those while drawing a further three and losing four.

Before Atletico face Gijon, they have a Thursday evening fixture away to Racing Santander to contend with. Last weekend they had a great 3-0 home win against Numancia and because of this managed to keep the pressure on fourth placed Valencia for the fight for the fourth Champions League spot. Obviously, Thursday evenings result is unknown to us at the moment (this article was written prior to the outcome of the game), but the result will have a huge impact on those Champions league qualification spots.

In their game last weekend against Numancia, the first half ended goalless, but the enormity of the situation in regards to Champions League places sunk in at the interval and they came out in the second half and blew their opponents away. Goals from Banega, Forlan and Simao sealed the deal for the home side and their fans left happy in the knowledge that at least their team were not giving up the ghost.

For their part, Sporting Gijon also have a Thursday night game to overcome (against Espanyol at home) before they contemplate the game with Atletico. Last weekend they lost 2-0 at Real Betis and as a consequence remained in seventeenth position, one place and three points above the relegation zone. Obviously things are looking grim at the moment, and they will feel that they have to get a result both in Thursday evening at home to Espanyol and then again at Atletico on Sunday.
