After raining goals down on Panathinaikos recently, Guardiola’s starting line up will likely consist of Pique, Abidal and Maxwell with Puyol doubtful after being ruled out for up to three weeks after picking up an injury to his thigh. It is almost a certainty for on form full back, Dani Alves, to start with his club showing a keen interest with talk of extending his contract. Double goal scorer in the champion’s league, Messi is very likely to start and will be hoping to add to his goal tally. If the Argentine can regain his killer instinct and work with David Villa, Barcelona may be set to dominate La Liga as expected.
After recently scoring against Mallorca, defender Botia is likely to be in Preciado’s starting line up alongside Arnolin and Spaniard Roberto Canella. Newly added Striker Nacho Novo may make an appearance hopeful of securing a place in the starting eleven. Eguren is likely to start alongside Diego Castro who will be confident after scoring from the penalty spot against Mallorca. Barcelona have already secured their first trophy of the season by winning the Spanish Super Cup in fine style, dispatching Athletic Bilbao 5-1 on aggregate. They won the first game 2-1 in Bilbao and then comfortably defeated their rivals 3-0 in the Nou Camp last Sunday with two goals from Lionel Messi and one from Bojan.
Barcelona’s transfer dealings have been nowhere near their bitter rivals Real Madrid’s level, although they did splash out big to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan; to the tune of €46 million to be precise. They also added Keirrison from Palmeiras and Maxwell also from Inter Milan to the squad – and that was the sum total of their dealings. On last season’s evidence, Barca hardly needed to be adding personnel anyway, and it may even have been a major decision not to add too many so as not to disrupt a team that has been playing phenomenally well.
The Barca faithful will fill the Nou Camp on Monday evening hoping that their team can really hit the ground running in this season’s campaign, and will be looking for a few goals to go with a victory.
