In their game prior to the international break kicking in, Atletico face the daunting task of a Madrid derby to contend with. Not something you look forward to when your season has disintegrated before your very eyes. The game was played at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, but is soon became evident that Atletico were going to face another tough afternoon when Kaka opened the scoring for Real in the fifth minute. When Marcelo on 25 minutes, the writing really was on the wall for Atletico and their fans, and this was compounded further when Higuain scored a third for the Galactico’s on 64 minutes.

But football has a very funny way of making the presumably simple become something much more difficult, and this is what happened to Real Madrid when Sergio Ramos was sent off in the 66^th minute. Atletico took the initiative and reduced the score when Forlan scored on 79 minutes. When Aguero pulled another back two minutes later, the home fans started to believe in the miracle. Despite their best efforts though, they didn’t manage to score another goal and the game ended 3-2 Real.

The result means that Atletico remain just two spots off the bottom of La Liga with only seven points to their name, and things are starting to look ominous. For their part, Deportivo come into the game on the back of a 2-0 away win at Getafe and they are now fifth with nineteen points.

Last weekend, Atletico entertained Ossasuna in Madrid but suffered a nightmare game. They eventually lost 4-2, which did their Champions League chances no good at all. Although Diego Forlan managed to equalise an Ossasuna opener, by the 69^th minute they were trailing 4-1 in what was threatening to be a “massacre”. They did manage to pull one goal back though, but at the end of the day the fans were not happy at all - with either the performance or the result.

After enjoying a very successful first Champions League experience this season, the fans were hungry for more next season, but the way things are going at the moment, Atletico will be lucky to just qualify for the inaugural Europa Cup.

For their part, Deportivo are having just as a frustrating season as their visitors. Last weekend they travelled to Barcelona to face Espanyol and duly lost the game 3-1. That result meant that they remain in eighth position in La Liga with 43 points, the same as Atletico and Malaga. Their home record is quite good, with eight wins, four draws and just the two defeats.
