Atletico Madrid recorded their third successive La Liga win and their fourth game unbeaten this past Sunday when they defeated Sporting Gijon at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Their accumulation of points continued and at last the fans are beginning to enjoy the season to a certain degree. Gone are the fears of relegation that haunted the team before the Christmas period, and now a real sense of a push for a European spot is sweeping the side. Atletico Madrid fans enjoyed their game against Sporting Gijon this past weekend. Diego Forlan opened the scoring for the home side in the thirteenth minute and although Sporting managed to equalise thorough a penalty to send both teams in level at half time, Atletico came out with real purpose in the second half and when Paulo Assuncao restored their lead on 53 minutes Atletico were on their way. A third by Balde on 66 minutes effectively killed the tie, although Sporting did manage a consolation goal in the last minute of the contest.

The result gives Atletico Madrid 23 points for the season so far, and although they remain in eleventh spot, they have started to close the gap on those teams immediately above them. Their interest in gaining a European spot, therefore, is very much on.

For their part, Getafe go into their home game against Atletico on the back of a 1-0 away defeat at Malaga. After eighteen La Liga games they have 27 points to their name and are in eighth position in the league table.
