Real have an amazing recent record against Santander. The last six meetings between the two sides have all gone the way of Los Blancos, with Santander only managing to score once in these fixtures.

Real’s Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain seems to enjoy playing against Santander. He has netted in four of the last five meetings between the two sides in all competitions. It was Higuain who proved to be the difference on Santander’s last two visits to the Bernabeu as Los Blancos won 1-0 on both occasions.

Real come into this fixture on the back of a tough clash against AC Milan in the Champions League while Santander were last seen in action at home against Almeria. Real are yet to lose a game at home this season in the league while Racing are still seeking their first triumph away from El Sardinero.

Before the international break kicked in, Real had the small matter of a Madrid derby to contend with. They did eventually manage to win the game 3-2 at their rivals Estadio Vicente Calderon, but the eventual manner of the win will have had many Real fans biting their nails with worry.

The game started off well enough as Kaka scored the opening goal in the fourth minute of the contest. When Marcelo scored on 25 minutes, and then Higuain on 64, for all intents and purposes the game was finished as a contest. But enter the sending off of Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos in the 66^th minute, which put a different complexion on the game entirely.

Atletico, with their superior numbers, battled back and within the space of two minutes, 79 and 81, they managed to pull the score back to 3-2, much to the disbelief of both sets of fans. This set up an unbelievably tense finale, but try as they could, Atletico could not find the equaliser. The three points gained by Real in the match keeps them very firmly on the heels of leaders Barcelona. Barca leads with 26 points and Real are second with 25.

For their part, Racing Santander come into the game on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao. They now sit seventeenth in the table with just seven points to their name.
