Real won their second game of the season last weekend, making it two out of two when they travelled to Barcelona and thrashed Espanyol 3-0. It was a thoroughly businesslike performance as they put the Catalans to the sword and it appears that the galaxy of stars at Madrid are finding their feet faster than anyone could have predicted.

In the game against Espanyol, goals from Granero, Guti and Ronaldo was enough to give them their convincing and impressive victory; a victory that is sure to get the boys from Barcelona sitting up and taking note.

Real are one of four teams that have maximum points from their first two games. The others are (obviously) Barcelona, Valencia and last season’s losing cup finalists Athletic Bilbao. Barca lead the way with a plus five goal difference, with Real and Valencia following with plus four, and Athletic on plus two.

On Tuesday evening Madrid travelled to Zurich for their first encounter of this season’s Champions League to play FC Zurich. The game ended 5-2 to Real, a further testament to their strength this season. Maybe the fact that this year’s Champions league final will be played in the Bernabeau will spur them on in the competition this season.

For their part, new boys Xerez have not enjoyed the best of starts to life in La Liga. They have lost their first two games and last week went down 1-0 at home to Athletic Bilbao.
