Barcelona travels to lowly Tenerife this coming Sunday, a week after surprisingly being held to a 1-1 draw at the Nou camp by mid table Villarreal. Luckily for Pep Gardiola’s side Real Madrid failed to win the following day, so things remain as they were at the top of La Liga. The last thing Barcelona fans expected from last weekend's encounter with Villarreal at the Nou Camp was to drop their first home points of the season. Drop points they did though and the 1-1 draw more than raised a few eyebrows. Despite taking an early seventh minute lead with a goal from Pedrito, Barca couldn’t make their early advantage pay and with the start of the second half Villarreal exerted themselves and managed to find an equaliser on 51 minutes. Despite the best efforts of both teams in the remaining 34 minutes, neither could find the net and the game remained 1-1 until the final whistle.

The most important thing for Barcelona though, was the fact that the day after their draw with Villarreal, bitter rivals Real Madrid couldn’t take advantage as they too were held to a draw, 0-0 at Ossasuna. That means Barcelona remain on top of La Liga with 40 points, while Real Madrid follow closely in second with 38 points.

For their part, Tenerife go into the home game against Barcelona on the back of a 2-0 away defeat at racing Santander. The defeat meant they fell to seventeenth in the league table and they have fifteen points to their name.
