Barcelona played host to hated rivals Real Madrid on Sunday evening in the first El Clasico of the season at the Nou Camp and emerged victorious with a 1-0 win. Despite Real Madrid playing the better in the first half of the encounter, and missing some good chances to boot, Barcelona emerged in the second half with more intent. Coach Pepe Gardiola pulled off a masterstroke of a substitution very early in the second half when he replaced Thierry Henry with Swedish international Ibrahimovic. The Swede hadn’t been on the pitch more than five minutes when he hit what was to turn out to be the winner with a wonderful volley from an inch perfect cross from Dani Alves.

The win by Barca in front of 98,000 ecstatic Catalan supporters moved them ahead of real Madrid in La Liga and they now have thirty points compared to Real’s 28. Barca are still unbeaten in this season’s La Liga with nine wins and three draws to their name. Away from the Nou Camp they have three wins and three draws.

For their part, Xerez suffered a mauling at the weekend, going down 5-1 away at Getafe. They sit in last position in La Liga with just seven points to their name.
