With only four games left of the French Ligue 1 this season, Lyon’s bid for an eighth successive title is now virtually dead in the water following last weekend’s desperate 2-0 away defeat to Valenciennes. They are now seven points behind leaders Marseille and Bordeaux, who both share top spot with 68 points. Lyon have now gone four league games without a win, and this has effectively killed their chances of retaining their league crown – one they have worn for the last seven seasons. While this may be good for French football as a whole, the Lyon fans will not agree and are aggrieved at the tame surrender of the title. What the fans, along with the players and management, have to really worry about now, is whether they can hold on to that coveted third spot that will give them France’s last Champions League qualifying team. Two wins out of their last nine league games is more like relegation form, not the form of a team that had aspirations of winning the league title. It is obviously time for the clubs hierarchy to take a long hard look at the team and maybe decide it is time to break things up and start afresh.

For their part, Nantes come into the game on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to bottom side La Havre. They are deep in relegation trouble, sitting third bottom with 33 points, and their run of form of late is worse than Lyon’s, with one win in twelve games.
